How can I choose maternity clothing that will look good in the early transitional months (when my tummy is only starting to show) and still fit until the end when I am at my biggest?
One of the common challenges mothers-to-be face is clothing during the transitional stage. This is the stage where your tummy is starting to grow and show. Your usual clothes will be too tight to fit into while maternity clothing may be somewhat too roomy for your early stage tummy. You want comfort yet do not want to look like you are wearing something too oversized or shapeless in the transitional months. What then is your best bet when picking maternity clothing to maximize usage for both ends of the spectrum???
Look for slimmer styles and, wherever possible, opt for stretchable fabric. For tops or dresses, choose styles that are more close-fitting - nothing too flared or gathered. Simple classic lines such as A-line and empire that are not too full are great for creating the illusion of "slimness". Steer away from those which are generously gathered at the underbust. Unless you are showing rather big even early on, fussy gathered details will create too much "fullness" and may appear too big for your transition stage. You may look pretty shapeless, even tent-like if wearing a heavily flared garment in the early months.
The trick is to pick a sleek silhouette, a slight to modestly flared garment (a very slight flare will suffice if you love the body-hugging look) in stretch fabric. Stretch fabric that drapes beautifully is a plus. These will provide you with a more "streamlined" or snug look in the early stages and yet stretch to make room for the later months.
